Welcome to the World of Reformer Pilates
If you've been curious about Reformer Pilates but aren't sure where to begin, you're in the right place. The Reformer can look intimidating at first — all those springs, straps, and moving parts! But once you understand the basics, it quickly becomes one of the most intuitive and rewarding ways to move your body. Here's everything you need to know to get started.
What is a Pilates Reformer?
The Reformer is a bed-like frame with a sliding carriage, adjustable springs, a footbar, and straps. The springs provide resistance (or assistance) as you move, making it suitable for all fitness levels. Unlike mat Pilates, the Reformer supports your body through movement, which is why it's often used in rehabilitation as well as fitness.
Do I Need Experience Before Using a Reformer?
Not at all! The Reformer is actually very beginner-friendly when used correctly. That said, we always recommend starting with a few guided sessions — either in person with a qualified teacher or through a reputable online programme — before practising independently. This ensures you understand the fundamentals of alignment, breathing, and spring settings.
Learn at Your Own Pace with Our Video Library

Understanding the Springs
Springs are the heart of the Reformer. Most Reformers have 4–5 springs of varying resistance (typically colour-coded). As a beginner:
- Start with lighter spring resistance for most exercises — this requires more core control
- Use heavier springs for footwork and exercises where you need more support
- Always check your spring setting before beginning any exercise
5 Beginner-Friendly Reformer Exercises to Try
- Footwork — The foundation of Reformer work. Lying on your back, feet on the footbar, you push and pull the carriage using your legs. Excellent for alignment and leg strength.
- The Hundred — A classic Pilates exercise adapted for the Reformer. Great for core activation and breath coordination.
- Leg Circles — Using the straps, you draw circles with your legs to mobilise the hips and strengthen the core.
- Short Box Series — Seated on the carriage, this series works spinal flexion, extension, and rotation.
- Elephant — Standing on the carriage, this exercise stretches the hamstrings and challenges core stability.
Tips for Your First Sessions
- Wear fitted clothing so your teacher (or you) can see your alignment
- Go barefoot or wear grip socks
- Don't rush — Pilates is about precision, not speed
- Focus on your breath — inhale to prepare, exhale to move
- Listen to your body and rest if something doesn't feel right
